Deborah Halpern is a multi-disciplinary artist who explores the mediums of sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass blowing and printmaking. Throughout the course of her 3-decade long career, Halpern has produced an extraordinary body of work.
Halpern has produced some iconic public commissions and the Melbourne audience would be familiar with her 1987/88 “Angel” initially installed in the waterfalls at the front of the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road, and now located on the bank of the Yarra at Birrarung Marr; her 1992 “Ophelia” commission sculpture at Southgate, and more recently her “Portal” sculpture (2017) commissioned for the Point Leo Estate. ‘
Halpern’s works exude an innate vitality and alluring simplicity. Spontaneous in form, her creatures which continue to delight and surprise, are painted in a style that recalls visions of the Catalan modernist, Antoni Gaudi, Spanish painter Pablo Picasso and the playful surrealism of female French sculptor, Niki de Saint Phalle.
As she has stated: “to see something whimsical, surprising and delightful in the landscape is always inspiring”.
