Award-winning fibre artist, Zetta Kanta, gained her familiarity with fabrics and textiles from her background in fashion design. She works from her home studio creating impressionist-style, modern wall-hangings and tapestries with natural materials that resemble paintings.

In 2013, Kanta held her first solo exhibition in Queensland. Throughout these years she has installed numerous large-scale works in both public and private spaces. In 2019, the Gippsland Art Gallery acquired her work “Wild Woods” for its permanent collection.

As an artist Zetta considers herself an ‘impressionist’, deriving inspiration from nature, focusing on natural patterns and examining the effects of light, movement of life and sustainable coexistence amongst millions of species on this planet. Using fibres of natural materials such as wool, silk, Black diamond bamboo, raw flax and cotton as my paintbrushes, her practice focuses on the rhythm and movement of lines as well as the tactile quality given by juxtaposing different textures.

The ancient technique of felting, her signature technique, allows her to make spontaneous patterns and lines, focusing on the process of the creation rather than the outcome. The respect and knowledge for felting unlocks her creativity and inspires me to create artworks that live in between figuration and abstraction.

This unconstrained approach incorporates the Philosophy of wabi-sabi into Zetta’s work: wabi-sabi is a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, and also a way of life which values slow-living, contentment and simplicity.

Zetta mainly works with interior designers and architects to bring this philosophy of calm into homes or workspaces. Her works are displayed in public spaces and have wooed the hearts of many private collectors both in Australia and internationally.
